In the meantime — Arizona Snowbowl typically opens for fall scenic chairlift rides in October. Worth checking their site if you want the aerial view of those fall colors: arizonasnowbowl.com
🏔️ Trail of the Week: Lockett Meadow & Inner Basin
The most stunning fall hike in Flagstaff — and it's right in your backyard.
Moderate · 3.5 miles out-and-back (full Inner Basin) · San Francisco Peaks
If you only do one hike this fall, make it Lockett Meadow. Tucked inside the caldera of the San Francisco Peaks, this trail winds through one of the most jaw-dropping aspen groves in Arizona. In October, the whole basin goes gold — it's the kind of view that makes you forget you live in the desert. Go on a weekday morning if you can; weekends fill up fast and the road is one lane.
📍 Trailhead: Lockett Meadow Campground — take FR 552 off US-89 north of Flagstaff
🐕 Dog Friendly: Yes, leashed
🅿️ Parking: Limited — arrive before 9am on weekends or you'll be hiking from the road anyway
⚠️ Heads up: The upper road to the Inner Basin has had seasonal closures — check current conditions with Coconino National Forest before you go
🏔️ Runner-Up Trail of the Week: Aspen Nature Loop at Arizona Snowbowl
Another stunning fall hike in Flagstaff.
Moderate · An easy 1.9-mile loop trail.
This trail provides breathtaking mountain views and is ideal for summer hikes when wildflowers bloom along the route. It’s a cool, winding trail that passes through aspen groves and open meadows, offering scenic mountain vistas. In winter, the area is covered with snow and includes a ski run. The trail is straightforward to navigate and tends to be less crowded, especially on weekdays. However, the terrain can be rocky, so wearing suitable footwear is recommended.
📍 Trailhead: Humphreys Peak Trailhead parking lot —Drive north on U.S. Route 180 for about 7 miles, turn left into the lower parking area of the Humphrey’s Peak Trailhead parking lot. Find the start of the trail near the north end of the parking lot, where it intersects with the Humphreys Peak Trail #151.
🐕 Dog Friendly: Yes, leashed
🅿️ Parking: You can park for free in Lot 1 (the lower parking lot) off Snowbowl Road
⚠️ Heads up: : Fall weekends bring heavy traffic, packed parking lots, and major congestion along Snowbowl Road.
💡 Insider Tip
Layer up — for real. Flagstaff sits at 7,000 feet (hence the name 😉) and October mornings can start in the 30s even when the afternoon hits 60. If you're heading up to Lockett Meadow or anywhere on the Peaks, bring a real jacket, not just a hoodie. The aspens are stunning but hypothermia is not.
